Old World vs New World – Blind Tasting (Part-1):
To get things started, two unknown chilled whites were poured. Both had the visual appearance of a light, crisp light-bodied wine with very slight coloration. At first glance, I’d say these wines were either Pinot Gris/Grigio or possibly a Chenin or Sauvignon Blanc.
Wine-1: Nose – light, sweet peach; Flavor – crisp yet elegant and light, prominent flavors were pear and green apple; Acidity – medium.
Wine-2: Nose – medium, sweet grass; Flavor – sharp, crisp citrus (grapefruit) with hints of vegetable and earth; Acidity – light to medium.
Comparison: I instantly noticed Wine-1 was more subdued in both bouquet and flavor. Wine-2 boasts a sweet bouquet of grass that was upfront and in your face. Yet, when hitting the palate things took a 180 degree turn with citrus-forward notes of grapefruit. Both wines were very nice in their own regard, yet I found myself preferring the subtle nuances of Wine-1 with its crisp and elegant flavors of pear and green apple.
