Wine Review: Radius Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Radius CabernetToday we take a look at the Radius Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage 2010 made available by Total Wine. Hailing from Washington State’s Walla Walla Valley, this medium-bodied fruit-forward Cab comes packed with with jammy flavors of black cherry and black current.

Categorized as a budget wine, this red has pleasant aromas and enough flavors to keep things interesting. But make no mistake, this is not your typical Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, we feel this red drinks more like Zinfandel – which should appeal to a wider audience of wine enthusiasts who prefer a little less body and strength. Now, let’s break this wine down shall we?

Radius CabernetFlavor: Uncork: I opt for my hand-held cork screw and ease the cork from the bottle. I chose not to decant this bottle. Instead, I let the bottle breathe for a few moments before pouring a glass using the popular Vinturi Wine Aerator. Aroma: Watching the translucent red make its way thru the aerator in to my glass produced a sweet black cheery aroma. Swirling the wine produces additional fragrances of jam and hints of acidity. I also detect a slight hint of spice, but nothing too pronounced. (video on swirling from winefolly.com)

Experience: First Impression: Taking a moment to swirl the drink around in my mouth – making sure every area of the tongue experiences the wine – I notice a velvety smooth wine with a ton of fruit-forward sweet notes. The dominant flavors are same as the aroma – black cherry, black current with slight acidity and spice. There isn’t much complexity here at all, just straight up-front sweet berry flavors for the most part. This is not a knock in any way, there are a number of wine enthusiasts who enjoy a slightly sweeter red. At under $10 this is a nice, simple sipping red and should be viewed as such. Continued Consumption: The flavors remain consistent throughout, no real transitions either. For me personally, this isn’t what I expect from a Cabernet Sauvignon. But for those interested in a solid medium-bodied red for under $10 – and one that drinks well one its own – this may be the perfect bottle for you.

Final Thoughts: Not much to say that hasn’t already been said. The Radius Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage 2010 is a nice little red filled with semi-sweet jammy fruit flavors. Those expecting typical complex Cab flavors will most likely be disappointed. But those who like fruit-forward reds (similar in flavor to Zinfandel) will enjoy what this Radius Cabernet has to offer.
